BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!

YAMATO

I finally got the 10 best of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe DVD (which is was released to see if the full series set woulod sell, and every where the 10 best set was sold out as soon as it came in)

Of course as soon as Hubby and I got home I had to pop it in the DVD player. It has been years since I saw Masters of the Universe. My heart raced and I actually made a giggle when Prince Adam said "By the Power of  Greyskull". My husband [info]tazwolf  only saw a few episodes of Masters of the Universe cause by the time it came on the air he was around 14-15 years old and already "to old" to watch cartoons. I on the other hand was only 8 or 9 when the toys and series came out so my brother and I watch that show religiously everyday afterschool, we even watch SHE-RA PRINCESS OF POWER when that started to air.

Of course when THUNDERCATS came out I had abandoned all other afterschool shows, but thats another story all together.

Anyway, After watching a couple of the episodes of He-man on DVD I can see why it has such an appeal,  even at 30 I can see the why even adults would watch this show when I was a kid, the stories were complex, and delt with very adult issues. I especially like the storylines related to the Sorceress, Duncan(Man at Arms) and their daughter Teela.  I cant wait to see these episodes again when they are released on DVD in their intended chronological order. :-)

They dont make cartoons like this anymore

Indeed she was. The Sorceress's real name was Telana (pronounced TEA LA NA)
According to the 1st cartoon series She had married a warrior of Eternia and had a daughter(Teela) Her husband died in some battle and his brother/Bestfriend Duncan aka Man At Arms adopted Teela and promised The Sorceress never to reveal that she was Teela's mother because since Teela was next in line to be the protector of the Ancient's Knowlege and Greyskull, Evil forces would try to use Teela to get to the Sorceress, or Kill Teela to prevent the powers of Grey Skull from being transfered.

The series ended before they could go into further detail

In the comic book Teela was the result of a Love affair between Duncan and the Sorceress. He still ahd to keep not only the love affair secret but the fact that Teela was the result of the affair.

In the new Animated series, Duncan and Telana are Teela's biological parents. The secret about the Sorceress being Teela's mother is still kept in this "timeline" as well as Duncan aka Man at Arms being the former lover/husband of the Sorceress.

It seems regardless the "timeline" so to speak the Sorceress is always Teela's biological mother and Duncan/Man at Arms is either the guardian or the biological father. In the original series they wanted to make Duncan the biological father but the censors of the time would not allow it , although it was allowed in the comics and novels.

According to the creators of the series. The Sorceress was one of a long line of Protectors of the Ancient's and their powers and guardian of Greyskull. The unbroken line of Mother and Daughter dated back to teh days when Eternia was ruled by the Ancients. When ever a daughter would take her mothers place as the new protector of Greyskull, she would be endowed with all the knowledge and experiences of her predescor, she would also become an unaging immortal until such a time she would either pass on the mantle willingly to her daughter/granddaughter or if she died in "battle" protecting Greyskull or Eternia from the forces of darkness.

According to the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE series bible The Sorceress of Greyskull was hundreds of years old by the time Prince Adam was born.

*snerk* There's nothing wrong with geekitude. I liked the cartoon well enough, but never read the comics, etc. My extreme geekitude was reserved for Star Trek at that point.

I am one of those geeks that likes to find out the "story with in the story" so to speak. Which is why I instantly loved Babylon 5

He-man was filled with such story lines and was complex enough for adults to enjoy as well, I know watching them again makes me appreciate them more for their continuity and complex stories, something not seen as much anymore in cartoons.

I cant wait for Thundercats!

I used to really like Thundercats, despite the dumb names (Cheetara? Please.). I also used to watch GI Joe, Transformers, Silverhawks, He-Man, She-ra and...something else, right around the same time. Oh, yes. Voltron. I used to walk that two miles or so from school to my house as fast as I possibly could, even taking the trestle shortcut over the river, despite being afraid of a) water, b) heights and c) getting squished by a train.
